William Clifford serves in an “of counsel” role with the firm of Skelton, Taintor & Abbott in Auburn, Maine, primarily working with clients in the areas of:
William has practiced law in the Lewiston/Auburn area since 1956, including eight years as the county attorney for Androscoggin County. He entered into private practice in 1956 and has served as a partner of the firm formerly known as Clifford, Clifford & Stone since 1973. The firm merged with Skelton, Taintor & Abbott in 2000.
As a longtime general practitioner, William brings to bear his broad experience in a variety of different areas of law, including criminal defense, domestic relations, business disputes, personal injury, real estate, probate and estate planning.
Since joining the firm, William has focused his practice on real estate matters, including conveyances, boundary disputes, purchase-and-sale agreements and foreclosures. He often works with borrowers and lenders to restructure mortgages so as to avoid the borrowers’ loss of their home to foreclosure.
He also counsels clients in estate-planning matters, such as wills and powers of attorney.
William prides himself on taking a practical approach to finding solutions for his clients and keeping clients abreast of developments in their cases.
In addition to the state courts, he has been admitted to practice in federal court in Maine since 1973.
William is a member of the Maine State Bar Association and a former president and current member of the Androscoggin County Bar Association. He formerly served on the Select Commission on Professional Responsibility and as a state senator, representing District 13.
For 22 years, he has chaired the Lewiston Historic Preservation Review Board, which has played an instrumental role in preserving, protecting and enhancing the city’s historic structures in areas such as the Dominican Block and the Pilsbury Block. He also has chaired the March of Dimes and served as a fundraiser for the United Way.
He is a member of the Maine Woodworkers Association and has built furniture as gifts for friends and family for more than 40 years.
A native of Lewiston, Maine, William graduated from high school at age 16. After prep school, he earned his undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College and his law degree from Boston University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.
