Jill Checkoway is a shareholder of the firm of Skelton, Taintor & Abbott in Auburn, Maine, who devotes her practice entirely to the areas of:
Jill has more than 30 years of experience advising individuals and families about the types of estate planning most appropriate for them. She has helped clients with plans aimed at reducing potential estate taxes by using methods from relatively standard marital trust estate plans to more sophisticated estate planning tools, including continuing trusts for children, irrevocable life insurance trusts and qualified personal residence trusts.
When working with estate planning clients, she places an emphasis on thoroughly examining the value of clients’ assets, and she strives to ensure that her clients feel comfortable about their options and choices, including fully understanding the terms of any estate plan and the tax consequences and impact on family dynamics that may result from their decisions.
As part of her probate practice, Jill works with clients to meet probate timelines, comply with tax requirements and distribute the estate’s assets in an efficient and timely manner. She has extensive experience in working with complex estates that involve issues concerning closely held business assets, irrevocable life insurance trusts and real estate sales or distributions.
In all areas of her practice, Jill makes it a point to be easily accessible to clients so she may promptly answer their questions and address their concerns.
A member of the Maine state bar since 1978, Jill is a fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and a former member of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court Advisory Committee on Probate Rules.

Born in Burlington, Vermont, Jill grew up in the Washington, D.C. area. She earned her B.A. in 1974, summa cum laude, from Purdue University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Jill received her J.D. from Boston University in 1978.
