Alan Stone is a shareholder and trial practice group leader of the firm of Skelton, Taintor & Abbott in Auburn, Maine. He is an experienced trial lawyer, representing individual, business and municipal clients in Maine’s state and federal courts and before administrative agencies in the areas of:

Alan has brought to bear his extensive trial practice background, skills and technique to represent personal injury clients in medical malpractice, automobile accidents, fire loss, electric utility accidents and wrongful death lawsuits.
In addition to representing plaintiffs, Alan has served as a defense counsel in numerous complex cases, including the successful defense of the state’s power company in a wrongful death electrocution jury trial.
Alan also has represented defendants in several serious felony and white-collar criminal trials, including successful defenses in murder cases. He has authored several papers that have been published in the Maine Bar Journal and Maine Criminal Law Journal.
He specializes in public utility and energy law, and he has been recognized in Best Lawyers in America® in energy law and in Chambers and Partners as a leading lawyer in the area of energy and natural resources. Alan regularly appears before the Maine Public Utilities Commission on behalf of municipalities, utilities and interveners. He is general counsel to Bangor Gas Company, LLC.
As part of his active trial practice, Alan also represents professionals before regulatory, licensing and disciplinary boards, including the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar and the Maine Dental Board.
Alan believes it is important to care about clients, pay close attention to their needs and to represent them with honesty and integrity that merits respect from his peers and the judiciary. He also employs state-of-the-art technology in courtroom presentations.
In recognition of his legal acumen and his ethics, Alan was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Maine Superior Court to serve as the Chair of Maine Medical Malpractice Review Panels.
Alan is skilled at negotiating and facilitating outcomes outside of the courtroom through alternative dispute resolution, including mediation and arbitration.
Alan also has served as a governor in the Maine State Bar Association, as a panel chair of the Maine Grievance Commission and as president of the Androscoggin County Bar Association.
He has received AV® Preeminent Peer Review Rating in the distinguished legal directory, Martindale-Hubbell®,* which is the highest rating possible. He is listed in New England Super Lawyers.
An active member of his community, Alan has chaired the school board and served as the town moderator for the Town of Raymond.
Prior to entering private practice in the Lewiston/Auburn community in 1979, Alan served as an attorney/hearings examiner with the Maine Public Utilities Commission.
A New York City native, Alan earned his B.S., magna cum laude, from Boston University. He went on to obtain his J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law, where he received the American Jurisprudence Award in Evidence.
